| ESOL (English for
Speakers of Other Languages) Classes |
|
ESOL
classes aim to help students study
at their full potential in
mainstream classes. The Classes
focus on assignment preparation and
writing, vocabulary extension and
study skills. The classes are small
with experienced staff who are
interested in each students
progress.
Subject Tutorials
Tuition is available for students
who need help in specialist subject
areas.
English study combined
with recreation
Conversational English classes
combined with outdoor and
recreational activities are
available throughout the year for
pre-arranged groups.
English Language
Examinations
English Language Examinations such
as IELTS, Pitman and TOEFL are
offered. Examinations are offered at
five levels: basic, elementary,
intermediate, higher intermediate
and advanced. Pitman examinations
are recognised by overseas
universities and potential employers
as evidence of proficiency level in
English. Information and guidance on
other examinations (e.g. SAT, TOEFL) is
available on request. Students who
wish to continue studying their own
language may do this through the
school or by correspondence.
Mainstream English
Language Preparation
An intensive English programme is
offered to international students to
equip them for study in standard
school subjects e.g. Science,
Mathematics. The Programme is
designed to assist students' English
Language acquisition in all key
skill areas as well as develop the
study skills required for student
centred learning. As English is used
to teach subjects at Shirley Boys'
High School, this programme teaches
specific skills used in the
classroom. In addition to
International Student Department
staff, specialist teachers help
individual students with any
difficulties in their subject areas. |
