Studying in New Zealand

You will probably find many differences studying in a New Zealand school. Here are some differences you will find:
  • You will be able to choose most of the subjects you want to study.
  • You will have a different teacher for each subject.
  • You will move to a different classroom for each subject.
  • The class sizes may seem small (under 30 students).
  • The relationship between the teachers and the students may seem quite friendly and relaxed.
  • Your teachers will want to get to know you and will be happy to answer your questions.
  • Do not be afraid to talk to your teachers.

You may also find differences in the style of teaching and learning. You will also learn by doing the following things:

  • Answering questions in class.
  • Giving your opinions and ideas in class discussions. Your ideas are important.
  • Working in pairs and small groups.
  • Problem solving, such as doing experiments in Science.
  • Research using resources such as the Internet, interviews, surveys, textbooks to find information about a certain topic. This is important in subjects such as Economics, English, Science and Mathematics with Statistics.
  • Giving speeches and seminars to your class.
  • Class trips and fieldwork.

At Shirley Boys' High School you will have the opportunity to meet many people from different cultures and countries.

Some students are here for a 'cultural experience' and to improve their English. They may be on a cultural exchange programme or be a good student from one of our partner schools.

Many International Students want to study for qualifications and then go to university in New Zealand or overseas. These students need to have a very good level of English and will complete all assignments, tests and exams. They usually stay at Shirley Boys' High School for more than one year.
