| The
Curriculum at Shirley Boys High School |
|
Our
curriculum comprises two broad areas:
- There is the
programme of classroom instruction and
learning which occurs between 8.45am
and 3.00pm. Success in learning is of
course enhanced by the development of
good study habits through a regular
homework and revision programme.
- Complementing this,
there is the programme of various
sporting and special interest
activities. Schools commonly refer to
these as extra-curricular activities.
For us, the word "extra" suggests
something that is simply added on. At
Shirley Boys' High School the students
are encouraged to take part in a wide
variety of school activities, in order
that they may discover and develop
interest and talents and further enjoy
their time at school.
The words "co-curricular
activities" better reflect our philosophy,
promoting the importance we attach to
participation in sporting and special
interest activities. Many of our hardest
working students in the classroom are also
fully involved in co-curricular activities.
These students have learned to effectively
organise their time.

Levels |
|
Year 9
Substantially the same subjects are taken by
all students. Options are not offered at
this level. Instead, the students are given
a little of each of the subjects available
at year 10, so that when they choose their
options for year 10, they do so on the basis
of some knowledge of the subject.
Some students are offered the opportunity to
learn a language. Students choose from
French, Japanese and Maori.
Year 10
All students study the core subjects. Option subjects can be either half
year or full year, giving the students the
chance to take between 2 and 4 options in
Year 10.
Year 11
All students study English, Mathematics,
Science and three
options.
Year 12
English is the only compulsory subject.
Students have the opportunity to study 5
other subjects. Several new
subjects are offered and students may begin
these and/or some of the many other options
available without having studied them in
year 11.
Year 13
There are no compulsory subjects at year 13
level. Students choose from the list of
options available. |
